How much does it cost to remodel a kitchen? Why does it cost so much? and How do I keep costs under control? These are three of the most common questions I hear when talking to homeowners about kitchen remodeling.

How much does it cost to remodel a kitchen?  It could be as little as $2000 or as much $100,000. The cost drivers are the overall size of the kitchen; the type and quality of the cabinets, appliances, countertop, and flooring; and the design, both overall and the details. The kitchen renovation cost calculator on our site (click here to try it out) can give you an instant estimate of the cost, but it is just a rough estimate. To get a more accurate estimate, you need to have the design finished and a good idea of what particular cabinets, appliances, countertop, etc. you want.

Here are 3 tips to keep costs under control.
1. Investigate cabinet options – custom cabinets are great, but they do come at a cost. Standard factory-built cabinets may be very good quality and may cost less than custom cabinets. So shop around to figure out what price and level of quality works for you. You may even find the cabinets you want at a deep discount.

2. Appliances are often a big chunk of the kitchen remodeling budget. First question is: do you need new appliances NOW? Appliances are generally easy to replace. So maybe stay with the ugly avacodo green oven for a few years and get the rest of the kitchen done. When the old oven does break or you can’t stand it any more you can buy a nice new one! Plus hanging on to those old appliances that still work can be the enviromentally friendly thing to do…unless of course the old appliances use more energy than the new ones. Sometimes it is complicated being “green”.

3. Finally shop around for the right person to do the job for you. While there is a strong correlation between quality and price for cabinets, appliances, and materials, the correlation isn’t as clear with people. Some contractors charge high prices to pay for their marketing and advertising, but then hire workers who aren’t craftsman. Other contractors may drive an old pickup truck, not have an office, and don’t spend a penny on advertising, but do fantastic quality work. You need to interview many contractors before you select one – check their references and trust your instincts to get a great contractor to work for you at a great price.  If you want help finding a contractor in your area, click here to use our locator service.

Can anyone help with a small kitchen design help? I am going to start remodeling our kitchen. It is a 1960′s ranch with a L shaped, 12 ft x 12 ft kitchen. I am planning to rip out the soffit and put cabinets up to the ceiling to increase storage space. I am looking for a shaker style which is in a dark finish, maybe espresso. Will the dark cabinets overwhelm the room and make it too dark? I have a window over the sink and a fixture above the table.

Dark cabinets will surely give a very good look with simple shaker doors. I would suggest a very light countertop and backsplash along with light wall paint. You can also use lots of lighting in the ceiling. Then it won’t look too dark and you will have plenty of contrast.
