Most of us are not interior designers – I’m sure if we put our minds to it we’d develop a knack for it, but designing a vivid, inspirational living space takes a lot of time, and if you can’t afford to pay an interior designer, there are a few simple ways to make your living space really pop!

It’s all too easy to rely on a color palette of white and beige, or its variations such as taupe, magnolia, cream, and so on! Sure, this color is light, airy and inoffensive; any type of furniture or artwork goes well against this backdrop, but it can also be incredibly boring. Now it wouldn’t be a great idea to paint your entire living room bright red, but a feature wall can be an exciting addition to any room. If you’re going for a darker color, it’s best to paint one of the smaller walls to stop the color dominatin the room and making it seem smaller. If you have a fireplace then the chimney breast is also a great canvas for a block of color or a patterned wallpaper design.

With a neutral background you have the opportunity to be more playful with furnishings; be bold with a vibrant color for your couch – purple, green or blue will look lively without being too overbearing. Alternatively, brightly colored cushions on a neutral tone sofa will give the room an exciting dash of color, and you can mix and match any patterns and designs to your heart’s content. This is also true of a large rug which can add an interesting dimension to your room without dominating it.

Anything ornamental can also have a colorful design – vases, pottery, bowls and trays are great for adding a playful touch to your décor.

This is the easiest way to show a flair for interior design without committing to anything long term! A variety of art will not only reflect your personality but can add an attention-grabbing feature and conversation piece to your room. And you don’t need to be a wealthy art collector to do it either – there are plenty of art shops where you can get a great range of affordable prints. Browsing online is also a good way to find pieces that suit you.
