Update: Calculating the average cost for a bathroom remodel is essential to knowing how much or how little you can actually do; knowing whether you can afford to replace everything and what type of materials you can use is vital before embarking on any definite plans. As well as working out a cost estimate, starting with a fixed budget is a good way to see how you can make your money work best for you – for instance, deciding to have a high quality but smaller bathroom, or a larger bathroom made from more affordable materials.

The average cost for a bathroom remodel depends on the size of the room itself. Below is a list of the different basic sizes and the average costs and a summary of influences on these averages – which will help you understand what drives the cost of a bathroom remodel and ultimately how you can get the bathroom you want for the price you want to pay.

Powder Room / Half Bathroom

Being the smallest, half baths are also the least expensive to remodel. They can be as small as 20 square feet and usually have just a toilet and a sink. The average cost to remodel a half bathroom is $2,500. The materials will average just $700 and the rest is labor.

A Three Quarters Bathroom

One that has a toilet, sink and shower used to be somewhat of an oddity but today it is just as popular as a full bathroom, which is one that includes a bathtub. The addition of the shower requires a larger area, typically at least 30 square feet and more plumbing and much more labor to remodel because of the shower. The average cost for a bathroom remodel for a three quarters bathroom is $4,500.

Finally for a full bathroom, which includes a bathtub, the average cost would be just

over $5,000.

While average costs are helpful, they may not apply to your situation. To get a better feel for the cost of you bathroom remodel you have to consider several variables. First is the size of the bathroom. The larger the bathroom the more flooring there will be and typically the larger the vanity and countertop. These items alone can add hundreds and possibly thousands to the cost of your bathroom remodel.

Next is the quality of the materials you use. You can select Formica countertops or Granite; you can use $50 sink faucets or ones that cost $500; you can use a fiberglass surround for the shower or tile. Each of the decisions has a huge impact on the cost of your remodel, and could easily double the cost of your bathroom compared to the average.

Finally, who does the work? Will you hire a high end contractor and designer to do all the work? Or will you hire subcontractors and do some of the work yourself? These are the kind of decisions that will affect the average cost for a bathroom remodel.

The Big Drivers of High Bathroom Renovation Costs

Bathrooms are expensive to renovate because they are packed with expensive materials that are often difficult to install.  $500 faucets, $10 a square foot tile, lighting, shower doors that can cost thousands – it all adds up to $5,000, $10,000 and even $20,000 in renovation costs for bathrooms. Fortunately YOU make the design decisions on which materials to use and who to hire to do the work so you can – within reason- spend what you want and get the results you want for your bathroom.

The labor costs include both the fees and markups added by general contractors as well as the labor of the tradespeople who do the framing. Flooring, tile, drywall, etc. All of this work can be done by a homeowner. If you choose to do some of the work yourself, make sure you do a lot of practice before taking on the task for you home. What looks easy on a youtube video invariably has a lot of tricks and techniques that aren’t obvious; especially with plumbing!
