The next step for your remodel is for the rough electrical.  The rough electrical is the wiring and boxes that are placed inside the walls and the any changes to your circuit breakers in the breaker box.

Rough Electric Updates that are common with kitchen remodels and bathroom remodels are

1. upgrade from 100amp to 200amp service.  100amp service was common years ago but with the addition of air conditioning many homes now need 200amp service or more.

2. dedicated circuits for bathroom outlets and a dedicated circuit for kitchen outlets.  This was not common in the past but now required in many cities

3. a dedicated circuit breaker for each appliance in a kitchen.  This often requires 5 or more new breakers for microwave, refrigerator, garbage disposal, dishwasher, warmer, ovens, ranges, etc. etc.

4. Ground fault interrupt outlets (GFI) and GFI breaker in the breaker box.  Arc fault breakers in the breaker box – a relatively new addition to the requirements by some cities.  Arc fault breakers are a great safety innovation but they do add a bit of cost and complexity to electrical systems.

The process for rough electrical is similar to rough plumbing.  Drilling a lot of holes and running wires and mounting outlet and switch boxes where they are required and needed.   This is a good opportunity to work with your family and your contractor to think about where you want outlets and where you want the lights and light switches and what the light switches control.  Often times these decisions are left to the electrician or contractor who selects the location to meet building code and may add a few based on their personal preference.    Take the time to be involved in this process.  It only takes a few minutes to think it through and it is awful to say after the remodel is done “gee i wish there was an outlet here or there”. Now is your chance to avoid any regret!
