I recall one home I saw which had undergone a remodel to finish a basement, which was done entirely by the homeowner. He essentially drew a line down the center of the basement from one end to the other. He then divided each side into rooms of the same size. He then proceeded to put up walls with a single door into each room. The walls went to the ceiling. The feeling one had upon reaching the bottom of the stairs was of being a rat in a maze.

Chopping up a house, choosing a design that is at odds with the architectural style of the home, choosing outdated materials, and disrupting the natural flow of space between rooms can make a home less desirable and less valuable. Bad design makes a house less comfortable, less accessible, and less valuable.
