All states do not require the same certification standards or licensing for contractors.

There are a few states that still require no certification or licensing for general contractors. Most states have certification requirements and licencing requirements for electricians, plumbers, heating/air conditioning/ventilation installation and repair, and handling and installation of gas lines.

Many states also have certification requirements for grading land and building home foundations. Some states regulate every aspect of residential construction including framing, drywall installation, brick and stone masonry and painting. There are also municipal and county regulations in a number of states.

To find out about licensing requirements in your location, contact your local building codes and inspections office. This department of your local government will be able to explain all state and local requirements at once.
