When you are remodeling your home proper planning is necessary because there is a lot at stake.  Some of the decisions you will have to make include who will manage the remodeling task and who will do the work, and what materials will be required. Here are some of the methods that you can use in order to get an estimate for your remodel.

Rate per square foot

This method, which is the most popular approach, can be used to get a cost estimate quickly. You just have to determine the area of the space to be remodeled and then allocate an amount for every square foot. Generally, the rate for every square foot ranges from $100-$700 depending on what is involved in the remodel.

For a quick illustration of how it works, here is an example. Suppose you wish to add a 100-square-foot space onto your bedroom, and you also want to renovate that bedroom.  The bedroom currently is 200 square feet, making the total area to be remodeled 300 square feet. Multiply 3oo sq. ft. by a cost-per-square-foot estimate, something between $100 and $700. Depending on which number you use, you will then have an approximated renovation cost of between $30,000 to $210,000.

Obviously, this estimate is too broad to be useful. You can get a much more precise estimate by using one of the free cost calculators on this site.  They cover remodels and additions for different rooms in your home. Theses calculators gain accuracy by taking into account additional information in your remodel, such as the quality of your remodel (budget, average, or custom),  how much of the work you will do, and what part of the country you live in.  Click here to take a look at the cost calculators

Professionals’ estimate

If you don’t want to do your own estimate, you have the option of obtaining the services professionals, namely architects or contractors. They will also utilize the cost-per-square foot method; however, they have a better idea of how much to use for the cost-per-square-foot value based on their knowledge and experience in the field. If you want to get an architect’s price quote, you have to pay a fee; contractors, on the other hand, will give you one for free. It’s a good idea to get estimates from several architects or contractors, as their quotes can vary greatly.  If you need help finding a contractor in your area, click here.
