As a general rule, the more you know about anyone who will be on your property or in your home, the better.

If you hire a general contractor, you would do well to understand whether the subcontractors are on the contractor’s regular full-time staff or are hired for specific jobs. You have the right to ask questions of a general contractor about the subcontractors s/he will bring into your home. You have the right be be assured they are competent to do the work to the specified standards and to be assured your family and your property will be safe.

If the contractor will select and hire the subcontractors, s/he bears the responsibility for their work and their actions. If you are acting as your own general contractor and managing your own project, you bear the responsibility to be just as careful about each subcontractor you hire as you would be when hiring a general contractor. You will be liable for the actions of those you hire.
