things in a home that are expensive to purchase and install are typically found in a kitchen.  It isn’t unusual to pay 10 times the price per square foot to renovate a kitchen than other rooms in a home.

Just because kitchens are expensive to renovate doesn’t mean you can’t keep costs down.  There are many opportunities to save a little or lot when you renovate.  Listed below of three great ways to save when you renovate your kitchen.  There are more ways listed in the book: 101 Ways to Save When you Remodel.  Just click here to learn more.

1.  Have you considered refacing or refinishing your existing cabinets?  This will cost much less than purchasing new ones. You can even mix new cabinets in with the old.  If you want a change, you can reconfigure the cabinets you have – a new layout may be all you need.  Reusing some or all of your cabinets can easily save you several thousand dollars, maybe more than ten thousand on your kitchen renovation.

2.  Countertops can cost from $10 to more than $150 per square foot, which – for a typical kitchen – can cost thousands of dollars.  If you are interested in granite, which is currently popular, consider a premade granite top or granite tiles instead of single piece slabs.  With tiles you will pay more for labor, but save on materials, so in the end it can be a big cost savings.  When looking for countertops visit multiple showrooms – you might get a deal on something that a customer ordered and didn’t pick up.

3.  Kitchen floors should be durable, water resistant and comfortable to stand on.  Linoleum and vinyl flooring meet these requirements.  Tile is the most durable, but miserable to stand on for long periods of time.  Hardwood is also popular and comfortable to stand on. Vinyl and Linoleum are less expensive then hardwood and tile and should really be considered – the more expensive styles look pretty good.
