If the contractor’s schedule is too long, there are a few things to consider.

The most obvious option is to hire a different contractor.

A second option might be to either manage the project yourself or to hire a project manager. In either of these cases, the contractor might act more as a consultant who then charges a consulting fee.

A third option is to work with the contractor to see if there are things you can do to make the schedule shorter. For example, deciding that you will put cabinets together in advance, instead of leaving that for the contractor and allowing time for that task in the schedule, could save time. You could then work evenings and weekend to assemble the cabinets and have them ready for the contractor.

You might also save time by agreeing to do as much as possible of the finishing work — caulking, painting, applying finishes.
