This is one of the most frequent “oops” mistakes homeowners AND contractors make – ordering long lead items and supplies too late.  If you want to have your project finish on schedule then your best and easiest way to make it happen is to order long lead items well in advance of when you need them.

So what are the long lead items?

Custom windows, doors, plumbing and other fixtures are the most common long lead items.  These items can take 3 to 6 weeks from the time your order them to when they are received so plan ahead.  Keep in mind that delivery of these items the week they are needed IS NOT going to prevent a delay in your project!  You should order all these long lead items so they arrive 3 to 4 weeks BEFORE your schedule says you will need them.  Then as soon as you receive the items schedule a time with the contractor to review the item to ensure it is the correct item and all the parts and pieces are in the package.

Tips to Keep Your Remodeling Project on Schedule

  1. Identify all the long lead items – custom doors, windows, plumbing and electrical fixtures, cabinets etc.  Typically items that will take 2 weeks or more to receive after you order.
  2. Order the long lead items so you receive them 3 to 4 weeks before they are needed
  3. When you receive the long lead items – meet with your contractor and inspect the items.  Reorder if necessary
  4. Protect the items from damage while they are in storage.
