With the addition of very important elements to your home – windows, electrical wiring and plumbing it is time again for another inspection by the city inspector. The inspection is the rough plumbing and electrical.  This inspection of your remodel, renovation or home addition focuses on the builders following very specific building code requirements for how the wiring, pipes and windows are installed for safety as well as testing for leaks etc.

The water supply lines need to be capped and pressurized showing that there are no leaks.  The electrical wiring needs to be stapled, routed to all the boxes, and protected from damage with nail plates, and be the correct gage for the different applications.  The waste – sewer lines need to be capped and then filled to the top with water to demonstrate they are water tight.  The waste lines also need to have nail plates cover them when they pass through a stud and be support both vertically and horizontally as they snake through the walls, ceiling and floors of your second story addition.  The gas lines need to be capped and pressurized to 15 psi to show they too are leak tight plus they need to be supported in and strapped when they cross long horizontal spans in the ceilings, crawl space and attics.

Frequently the inspector will find an issue – typically minor – where a nail plate is missing or there is a nick in the romex wiring.  If you are doing the work yourself you can speed up the process by having all the materials on hand and a helper standing by to fix any items the inspector finds before they leave showing that you do intend to fix the problems and if you are fast enough you can fix the issue before the inspector leaves and avoid the cost and hassle of getting a re inspection.
