Although you may like the appearance of recessed light fixtures, there are two things to consider before including them in your remodel or house addition design. First, they are only able to accommodate 40 watts of light or they overheat. Second the installation will be more costly. You will need to install three recessed lights to provide the same amount of wattage as a single wall- or ceiling-mounted fixture with a 100 watt bulb. For each recessed light, you will have the cost of the fixture, the labor cost to cut and insulate a hole in the ceiling, and labor cost to actually install and connect the fixture. The cost differential between one regular fixture and three recessed fixtures will probably be about $150.
