Composite wood or plastic trim boards are less expensive than natural wood. If your design calls for painted trim in your remodel or addition, this can be another great way to save on materials for your project. The cost of manufacturing trim boards from composite wood or plastic and creating the molding design is lower than milling and molding natural wood. If, however, your plan is to use stained or natural wood with only a protective sealant, this option may not provide the appearance you want. Once you apply paint to trim, only you will know that it is composite or plastic. If your budget is tight for the primary remodel, you might consider using the less expensive materials and replacing them with natural wood at a later date.
