Before you start investigating financing options with a lender, check your credit report and credit rating. Everyone is entitled to one free credit report from each of the credit reporting agencies each year. Your credit rating will affect the terms of the financing you are able to obtain for your remodeling project. Several months before you start talking to potential lenders, get a copy of your credit report from all three agencies. Review each report very carefully. Have any errors corrected. Doing this before you start talking with lenders could save you a good bit of money on your financing by enabling you to qualify for better loan terms.
