Before you start signing contracts or setting your final remodeling budget, you should get quotes from different types of contractors and from different sub-contractors. You may be able to save money by working directly with sub-contractors rather than having a general contractor find and hire sub-contractors. If you take this approach, you are essentially functioning as your own general contractor. It will be important in evaluating differences in pricing to be sure the materials are of comparable quality and that the finished work will meet both your standards and your schedule. Then you will need to decide if it is worth your time to find and hire each of the sub-contractors you need.
