Hardwood floors are beautiful and elegant. They are available in a wide range of wood stains and finishes, as well as sizes. You might choose the traditional 2″ boards or 4-6 inch planks. Most hardwood sold today is treated and sealed to prevent damage from dampness or humidity. Even untreated hardwood floors, if well maintained, will resist damage and remain beautiful for years.

There are a few things to consider, however, such as the smoothness and stability of the subfloor. Hardwood flooring should not be installed over warped subflooring. If you live in a region known for high levels of humidity, you might want to choose engineered wood for your subfloor. It will prevent damage or squeaking in the hardwood floor.

Pets are also said to be detrimental to hardwood flooring. Spilled water, accidents and toenails can cause damage to the sealants and finishes. If you want the look of hardwood, you might consider laiminated wood flooring as an alternative.
