Providing access to your finished attic space might be the biggest challenge you face in designing your remodel. You need to check with your local building codes and inspections office to ensure that you are building to your local code requirements.

On average, however, a staircase leading to the attic requires a space of about 3 x 13 feet at a 30 degree angle. The minimum headroom required in an attic living space is usually 10-1/2 feet at the ridge line.

Many building codes also require a ceiling height of at least 7-1/2 feet over 50% of the finished floor space.
