The idea behind the work triangle in kitchen design is to position the sink, refrigerator and range or cook top in a triangle because this is the most efficient use of kitchen work space. The three fixtures form the three points of the triangle.
The optimal distance between the fixtures is between four and nine feet. According to kitchen design experts, less than four feet between these fixtures creates a space that is too cramped to work. If the distance is more than nine feet, you waste energy and time because of too much walking.
The triangle can be designed in many ways. The sides to not need to be the same size. In many larger kitchens, efficiencies are created by designing multiple work triangles.
