A Jack and Jill bathroom is a new and unfamiliar idea to many people today. The reference was to a bathroom that connected two bedrooms and saved space by sharing the bathtub and/or shower.

Jack and Jill bathroom designs were very popular in the 1950s and can still be seen in a number of homes build during that period. For those who enjoy the television programs of the 50s and 60s, this bathroom design can be seen in several of the very popular shows, often being employed to great comic effect!

The best example of this can be seen on popular show The Brady Bunch; more recently Jack and Jill bathrooms have featured on Beverly Hills 90210 and Gossip Girl.

Ordinarily the bathtub/shower (usually a combination) was in the center of a combination bathroom that had a toilet and washbasin on each end or each side. The name is derived from the early use of these bathrooms between the bedrooms of two children (often a boy and a girl).

In many homes, the design was also used to provide privacy and save space when installed between a master bedroom and a second bedroom (often the guest bedroom). When using this type of bathroom, you want to be sure the other door(s) are locked.

Some designs allowed a person in one end of the bathroom to actually see through the shower into the other bathroom. The design was used as the basis for some great comedy over the years. This might be one reason the design is less popular today than it was fifty or sixty years ago.

It should be noted, however, that Jack and Jill bathrooms are still included in some home designs today, particularly if two children of the same gender want their own room, but can easily share part of a bathroom.

With the resurgence of ‘luxury’ home remodeling, many homeowners feel that Jack and Jill bathrooms won’t do; instead they want to be build bathroom additions so that people have their own private bathrooms.

This is fine if you have the space and the cash for a bathroom addition, but a Jack and Jill bathroom could be a good way to easily create more bathroom access in your home.
