Most Important Things to Ask in a Contractor Interview
Remodeling or restoring a home is a huge investment. The difference between a good experience and a bad one is the contractor. There are questions that should be asked of a contractor before deciding which one to go with. You will want to interview as many as you deem necessary to find the perfect contractor for your investment. Cheap is not always the best way to go and neither is expensive.
It is a good idea to start by writing down questions you feel are important to you as an employer. You will be employing a contractor to do the work, so essentially, you are an employer. Make a list of questions and keep them handy when interviewing contractors. Another good rule is to ask for references and contact these references. These should be references from recently completed contracts.
You may also want to make notes while interviewing these contractors. Different responses are sometimes hard to remember when interviewing numerous contractors. Make a list and make good copies to bring with you when interviewing each contractor. Remember to leave room for responses.
Make sure to give each contractor the same statistics for your project. This is the only way to get fair and true estimates. If you request an estimate and the contractor does not want to give you one, you may just want to move on to the next one. This would mean they either will go over the original estimate or their work is inferior.
There are 6 important points to consider when interviewing contractors. They are:
1.How does the contractor estimate the cost of a project?
2.Is the contractor registered with your state and insured?
3.Is the contractor courteous and understanding of your needs or are you able to develop a good work relationship with your contractor?
4.Do you feel the contractor is capable of completing the project to fit your needs and wants in a timely fashion?
5.Does the contractor have a good reputation and good references?
6.Does the contractor have enough experience to complete the project asked of him?
These are some of the points you may want to ask yourself while interviewing your contractors. Although they seem somewhat poignant questions, they are important and should be considered.
