Remodeling Savings Tip #154: Browse dump sites for materials

There is an old saying, "one man's trash is another man's treasure." This is the principle behind the popularity of flea markets and other sellers of used goods. I never cease to be amazed by the items some people send to the dump as trash. Browsing dump sites can be like striking gold on the right day. I have seen everything from perfectly good light fixtures, to items that simply needed rewiring, to tools, to well-constructed furniture in dump sites. Finding a gem at a dump is just a matter of perseverance, a willingness to dig around in the trash, and patience. Sometimes just driving by a dump will give you a sense of what is there at the time. Most people don't put large items or furniture into dumpsters. Other items may require a bit of digging around. You can find a number of items that can be cleaned up, refinished, reconditioned, etc. So put on some old clothes, borrow a pickup truck, and check out the dump. You just might find a diamond in the rough.
