1. How to Measure: Measure the length of your windows, deciding whether you want the drapes to fall above the sill, below it, or to the floor. If you like longer drapes that “pool” on the floor in luxurious folds, add 6 to 8 inches to the height measurement.

2. What color to choose: As a practical matter, don’t use white if you plan on pooling the drapes on the floor, especially if you have a wood floor.  The better color selection is a neutral “straw” color.  However, if the intent is drama, by all means choose a “Cardinal” red like the one pictured!

3. Rods Make a Statement: There are so many options today with regard to drapery rods. So too are the options for the finials. Choose a spectacular rod and add a special finial for the most effect. Then, to create the illusion of taller windows, install the rods 6 to 8 inches above the window frame rather than the standard 4 inches.
