Remodeling an old vintage home? Here are some vital tips:

  • Quality comes first when buying hardware for a historic home — there is no excuse for scrimping when it comes to craftsmanship;
  • Make sure you get a sample or see the hardware in a showroom, as it may look completely different on your computer screen than it does in real life;
  • Ask yourself how the hardware feels in your hand, as you will be living with it for many years (especially if you want to Age-In-Place in your vintage home!);
  • Find a good metal refinisher, because when it comes to finding vintage hardware, sometimes you can find the right style but the wrong finish;
  • It can be downright expensive to replace all the hardware in a vintage house so consider using new reproductions — even more so if refinishing is needed.
