Creating More Storage In Your Kitchen

Today I’m going to be sharing some of my organizing tips that I’ve learned over the years, specifically how to organize our pantries. I was recently contacted by a viewer who said they had just recently downsized, and that they didn’t have a pantry in their new home. I know how difficult it can be to not have a pantry to store your food in. And this one’s a really tiny one. And to say that it had no storage… is an understatement. (Chuckling) Take a look at what I had for my kitchen.

These were stand-alones on that wall. And they were the only cabinets in the kitchen. And everything like that. This was a 1950’s house. I can’t state that enough. There was no storage whatsoever. Sooo (chuckling). So I had to sacrifice 1 large cabinet area. And then that tiny little side above the sink. Ok, so the question of the day is… how do you organize your food if you don’t have a pantry?

The best advice I can give is to relocate other things that are normally in your cabinets, like your Tupperware, or your plastic containers, if you stored them in the lower cabinets, to the space above your refrigerator. Ok? I put things like my crockpot, uh… up on top of my refrigerator. I would put my blender, a Cuisinart… anything… the bigger appliances… toasters… I would store up above here. The main thing is to utilize your walls. You can also free up cabinet space by using Command Hooks, and hanging things on the walls instead of in your cabinets. Or you can use baskets to store things like potatoes, onions, or other food items that you need to store. You can also free up half a shelf in your cabinet above by using these wire racks. They come in all different sizes, so you can find one that fits perfectly in your cabinet.

I absolutely LOVE these! These are awesome for storage. And wouldn’t you know… cans fit perfectly. You can line this up with a bunch of cans… all your canned goods… right up there. Okay? Easy Peasy! Another tip is maybe repurposing another type of item, like a bookshelf, as a small pantry. Or a media rack. Something that’s shallow, and it fits beautifully, because they are like only 6 or 8 inches deep. As opposed to a deeper cabinet. Again to store different products. Now if you have young children, and you’re concerned about food products being within their reach, you can use that bookshelf or media shelf, for maybe storing their little plastic plates, or cups, or things like that. Things that would be safe around your children.

The main thing that I want you to remember, when you’re organizing your kitchen, or any other area of your home, is to set up a system that works best for you. And if you have young children, or grandchildren that are around, make sure it’s set up so it’s safe for them as well. If you’re 5 feet tall… often times we have little spaces that we can’t reach, so make sure it’s set up so it works easily for you. Another tip is if you’re using baskets, and things like that, you might want to think about securing it to the wall, just to be safe.

Now like I said, I got this at the Dollar store, but you can find these baskets anywhere. They come in all different sizes and colors. And they’re really cheap too. So if you’re looking for an inexpensive way to organize your kitchen, these are great. And then you can use this side of the cabinet for whatever food purposes you need.

Another tip is when you’re at the store, and you’re buying things in bulk, or things that come in big packages, often times we bring them home, and we just leave them in the boxes that they came in, which are way too big. So when you bring it home, take it out of the packaging, and put it into something that’s clear, so you can see what it is, and it’s easy to access. They come in countless different sizes, so you can find one that fits perfectly to your cabinet’s dimensions.

Another great tip is the space above your cabinets. This is often wasted space that we don’t use. And it’s perfect for storing things that we don’t use all the time, like holiday decorations, or other things that we don’t need on a daily basis. And then pop all of the “out of season” things up above the cabinets, so they’re out of sight and out of mind until you need them again.

And then finally, if you do not have a pantry, another great tip is to use an over-the-door shoe organizer for food storage. You can find these at any store that sells shoe organizers, and they’re really cheap too. So you can put all of your food items in there, and then just hang it on the back of your door. And then that frees up above the refrigerator for maybe storing food items that you don’t use all the time, or other things that you need to store up high.

I hope these tips were helpful for those of you who don’t have a pantry in your home. If you have any other tips that you would like to share, please leave them in the comments below.
