How do you cover a cane chair?

Covering a cane chair is relatively straightforward if you follow a few basic steps. First, gather together the supplies you need to get the job done. You’ll need fabric to cover the chair, a stapler, a staple gun, a drill, a screwdriver, and staples.

Next, remove the seat cushion if it is easily removable. Lay the chair on its back so that you can access the seat more easily. Cut the fabric that you have selected to the approximate size needed to cover the seat.

Lay the fabric over the chair and pull tight. Secure the fabric edges to the frame of the chair with the staple gun. Use the screwdriver to tighten any screws that have come loose. Next, drill pilot holes for the screws and then screw the cushion onto the chair frame with the screws and screwdriver.

Finally, attach the underside of the seat cushion with the same technique. All that’s left is to enjoy your newly-covered chair!.

How much does it cost to Recane a chair back?

The cost of recaning a chair back can vary quite a bit depending on various factors. First, the type of chair plays a role; different chairs require different tools and labor. Second, the type of cane used plays a role; certain canes require more labor and materials than others.

Lastly, the amount of damage to the original chair can also play a role; if the chair has structural damage or damage to the area around the chair, it could potentially increase the cost of recaning significantly.

Typically, the range of recaning a chair back can vary anywhere from $65-300+. However, if the damage to the chair is significant or if the chair requires a more intricate or specialty cane, the cost could potentially be higher.

Additionally, if an upholsterer is hired to do the work for you, that could include labor costs depending on their rates.

How much fabric do I need to reupholster a cane chair?

The amount of fabric required to reupholster a cane chair will depend on the size of the chair and the amount of cushioning required. To determine the exact amount of fabric needed, measure the chair’s width, length and height and refer to the upholstery newspaper for yardage requirements.

Generally speaking, you’ll need at least 2 yards of fabric for the seat cushion, 2 yards for the back cushion and 1 yard for the piping, welting or cording that outlines the chair. It is also a good idea to add an extra 10-15% in fabric to account for any shrinkage or pattern matching, or to make fabric repairs if needed.

The larger the chair, the more fabric you will need to cover it. Most upholstery projects will require additional supplies as well, like foam cushioning, batting, webbing, adhesives, etc. depending on the design of the chair.

Can you refinish cane furniture?

Yes, you can refinish cane furniture. Refinishing cane furniture requires some basic knowledge of how to use sanders and paints or varnishes. You should start by removing any old finish and cleaning the furniture.

You should then apply a fresh coat of paint or varnish using a paintbrush, preferably one specifically designed for use on wood.

After waiting for the proper drying time, you should apply a top coat of varnish to completely seal in the new finish. Refinishing cane furniture requires some basic knowledge, but with some dedication, you can refinish cane furniture and get it looking just like new.

How do you Recane a chair seat without a spline?

Recaning a chair seat without a spline is possible but it takes a fair bit of effort and precision. To do it, you will need a length of pre-woven cane, a hammer, a pair of pliers, and some strong glue such as carpenter’s glue.

Start by loosening the tension of the existing cane by gently hammering around the sides of each of the existing holes. This should loosen the cane from the frame, giving you access to the seat frame.

Once you’ve done that, use the pliers to remove the old cane webbing from the chair frame. Pull each piece of cane webbing out one at a time, taking care not to damage the cane or the frame.

Once the old cane webbing is removed, start placing the new cane webbing in its place. Start by stretching a length of cane webbing across the front edge of the chair frame, pulling the cane as tight as you can.

Secure the cane on one side of the frame by hammering together four small pieces of wood. This should be enough to hold the cane in place until you use glue to secure it.

Continue this process for all four sides of the seat frame. Finally, when all the cane is in place, use the glue to fully secure it in place. Make sure to use plenty of glue and allow the seat to dry completely before using it.

You should end up with a sturdy, secure seat!.

How do you attach cane webbing to wood?

Attaching cane webbing to wood can be a relatively simple process. There are two main ways to attach cane webbing to wood, depending on the type of material you are working with.

The first is to use a staple gun. Cane webbing is usually nailed through the wood and then secured with angled staples. It’s best to use a dedicated staple gun designed for upholstery or working with fabrics, as it will make the job easier.

This method shouldn’t be used for thin material. You should also wear eye protection when using a staple gun.

The second method for attaching cane webbing to wood is to use twine or string. You can wrap the twine or string around the frame of the piece and then wrap it around the webbing, tying it off at the end.

You can also use a loop knot to secure the webbing in place. This method is better for thinner materials and is particularly good for cane chairs or stools.

How do you fix a broken chair back?

If you have a broken chair back, the first step is to assess the damage. Different types of chair back damage require different repairs.

For a chair back with a broken leg or leg joint, you may be able to repair it with glue and screws. You will need to use a power drill to remove the broken screws and replace them with new ones. You can then glue the parts together and use clamps to hold them in place until the glue has dried.

If the back of the chair is cracked, you may be able to fill the crack with wood putty and sand it down. If the wood is fractured, you may need to use wood glue to reattach the pieces or replace the broken piece entirely.

If the chair back is damaged beyond repair, you may need to replace the entire back of the chair. Check with the manufacturer to see if they offer chair back replacements, as some may provide them for free.

If not, you can purchase a new chair back from a home improvement store and install it yourself.

Regardless of the repair you choose, be sure to use the proper tools and safety equipment to help ensure success.

How are caning chairs measured?

Caning chairs are often measured by the size and shape of the frame and seat. The standard width of a chair frame is 18 to 20 inches and the standard depth of a seat is 17 to 20 inches. The height of the chair frame also affects the overall measurement of the chair.

The back of the chair should reach up to the neck when seated. Additionally, the arms of the chair should fit comfortably on the lap when seated. The overall measurements of caning chairs can also be affected by the material used for the cane webbing.

For example, the size of the cane webbing will affect the seat size, as the holes for weaving need to be larger for a larger webbing. Furthermore, the number of rows of cane and the spacing of the rows can also affect the dimensions of the chair.

Finally, it’s important to take into account the type of cane used when measuring caning chairs, as certain types of cane require more space for weaving.

How do you measure caning?

Measuring caning is an important part of ensuring a comfortable and successful caning project. The most important measurement is the width of the cane, which should be measured in inches and compared to the size of the seat so that the loose and tight caning weave techniques can be accounted for.

After the width has been determined, the holes in which the cane will be inserted should be measured for depth and drilled based on what the size of the cane will be. To make sure the measurements are accurate, distances between each drilled hole should be marked equidistant, usually at three or four inches apart.

Finally, the length of the cane should also correspond with the length of the seat so measurements should include accounting for the additional rows of caning around the edge of the seat. Making sure that all measurements are accurate will provide for a straightforward and successful caning project.

Is caning a chair difficult?

No, caning a chair is not difficult. You may need a few tools and supplies, but the process is relatively simple. You’ll want to start by preparing the chair by sanding the seat and removing any old cane webbing.

Then use a spline roller or a flat chisel to make the channels in the seat that the cane strips will be woven through. Next, pre-soak the cane strips in water before weaving them through the channels in an over-under pattern.

When everything is finished, you can apply a coat of sealer or primer to protect the finished product from moisture and fading. With patience and attention to detail, you should be able to achieve a professional-looking caned chair in no time.
