How do you apply stain to mahogany?

Applying a stain to mahogany can be a rewarding experience and produce a very attractive finish. The process begins with prepping the wood by sanding it with a fine-grit sandpaper. Sanding will create a smooth surface that the stain can easily coat.

Once the wood is prepped, it is time to apply the stain. Make sure to use an applicator that is designed to work with stains, such as a brush or rag, as regular paint brushes may leave brush strokes and an uneven finish.

When applying the stain, rub it in the direction of the grain, making sure to keep a wet edge as you work. This will help ensure that you don’t get any lap marks. If any color is uneven, do not worry as the wood will soak up the stain in different areas.

Once the stain is applied, allow it to thoroughly dry before applying multiple coats. The type of top coat you choose depends on the look you are going for, such as a satin, semi-gloss or gloss finish.

Once the topcoat is applied, your mahogany piece should be ready to go.
