Why are some tools greyed out in Illustrator?

When tools are greyed out in Adobe Illustrator, it usually means that the particular tool is not compatible with the document or artwork that you have open. The available tools depend on what type of document you have open, so if you are working in a raster-based file, some vector-based tools such as the Pen tool or Shape Builder tool may be greyed out.

In some cases, it could also mean that the particular tool is only available in certain editions of Illustrator — if you are using a basic version of the software, some of the more complex tools or features may not be available to you.

Additionally, some tools may be greyed out simply because they are not relevant to the current task at hand. For example, this could be the case if you are trying to edit text, as tools such as the Brush tool will not be available as you can only select and edit type with the Type tool.
