How does an expanding bolt work?

Once this is done, the expansion bolt can easily be removed from the workpiece.

Alternatively, if you don’t have access to an impact wrench, you can first use an appropriate size wrench or socket to loosen the bolt. Then, use a pair of vice grips to forcefully twist the bolt until it backs out.

This will work, though it is not as efficient as using an impact wrench, and can sometimes cause damage to the bolt or workpiece.
