Why won’t Instagram go back to chronological order?

Instagram has moved away from a chronological order because the platform is designed to be customized to each individual user’s interests. The algorithm is designed to maximize user engagement by surfacing the content that is most relevant to each person.

With this in mind, a chronological feed would not be the ideal experience for many users.

Chronological feeds are a passive experience, meaning that users simply scroll through content without actively engaging with anything. With an algorithm-based feed, however, users must like and comment on content in order to indicate to the platform what type of content they are interested in.

This approach allows Instagram to provide a feed tailored to each user.

A chronological feed could potentially be an option within the platform, however, it would most likely be presented as an alternative to the algorithm-based feed. Ultimately, the move away from a chronological order was made with the interest of offering an overall better user experience, and to maximize user engagement.
