Can I get military benefits from my ex husband?

It is possible to receive military benefits from your ex-husband, depending on your individual situation and eligibility. Generally, military benefits are awarded based on a spouse’s status at the time of service.

If you were married to your ex-husband for at least 20 years, during which he was in active duty, you may qualify for military benefits from your ex-husband. Specifically, you may be eligible for medical coverage and military ID cards through the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).

You can also qualify for monthly compensation from the VA through their Dependency and Indemnity Compensation program, or benefits such as Survivor Benefit Plan annuities and access to military commissaries and exchanges.

In order to determine your eligibility for these benefits and how to apply, it is important that you contact your nearest VA office or hospital and ask to speak with a benefits representative. They will be able to answer any questions you may have and discuss what benefits you may be entitled to depending on your individual situation and your spouse’s military service.
